How women are affected

Gender inequality has a major impact on women. It stops them from being able to support their families and themselves, deprived them of opportunities and in extreme cases, causes injury and death. According to oxfam.org.nz, gender-based violence is one of the biggest causes of injury and death to women worldwide, causing more death and disability among women aged 15-44 years old than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war. Women are also more likely to be poor compared to men, meaning more women and children are underfed and malnourished. Women and girls make up 60% of the chronically hungry.

We sent a survey among our year group and got a number of different results. Below are graphs showing the results of the survey.

When asked how they though women and girls were affected by gender equality, we got a variety of responses. One student expressed that they felt that gender equality would mean that ‘we could express ourselves.better and not be judged’. Another said that it may ‘dishearten them to know that a man will get paid more for doing the same thing and she does as well as being seen as the wiser one.’ We learned from this survey that the girls felt that they were being held back, not being treated the same as men and were tired as being seen as weaker or less capable.
